About Us
Stone enjoys a delightful location midway between The Potteries to the north and
Stafford to the south. An ancient market town set in the Trent Valley with the
Trent and Mersey canal also running through the town.
The present Stone in Bloom group was set up three years ago and has been
responsible for the entry into the Heart of England in Bloom competition for
that time.
Stone has been taking part in the competition for many
years, in fact next year is our 21st anniversary and we still have
willing volunteers who were part of the original group!
Over the years we have won many awards but this year we are proud to say that
again we won gold and for the first time were winners of the large town
category.
We have received financial support from the Town Council,
the Borough Council/Streetscene for their tireless efforts keeping the Town
clean neat and tidy throughout the year and most importantly growing and
supplying the wonderful floral displays that adorn the Town. Our various
sponsors and most importantly the local business people.
If it were not for ‘Team Stone’ we would not have
achieved such success this year.
Take a look around the website to see what we get up to.
Stone in Bloom was originally sponsored by Stafford Borough
Council. They used to provide funding and officer support and were extremely
successful in gaining many awards from 1991 to 2007.
However, in 2008 Stafford Borough Council withdrew their
support and a group of volunteers ‘decided to go it alone’.
With financial
support from Stone Town Council, a wholly independent committee was formed and
has maintained Stone’s entry to the Heart of England in Bloom scheme.
With fantastic support and hard work from committed volunteers
and supporters Stone was awarded a Gold Award in both 2008 and 2009.
In addition to the official judging by Heart of England in
Bloom judges, we organise our own very popular ‘In Bloom Pub of the Year’
and ‘In Bloom Restaurant of the Year’ awards.
And the most rewarding competition of the year is always the
‘School in Bloom’ competition.
Stone in Bloom is totally dependent upon raising its own
funding and relies entirely upon volunteers to turn out on work parties to make
our town look ‘spick and span’ for the judges in July.
